I just knew that one day I wanted to be a part of the brother and sisterhood we call the fire service. - Captain C. Phillip Nelson
  • Fire Officer of the Year, 2019
  • Full time firefighter with the Guilford County Emergency Services Fire Operations Division
  • Firefighter for over 8 years
  • Certified: Firefighter 2, Instructor 2, Fire Officer 2, Haz-Mat Operations, Haz-Mat Technician, Technical Rescuer (vehicle and machinery, agriculture, water, and ropes), Wild Land Firefighter, Driver Operator including aerials, EMT B, NC Breathing Equipment School, NC Thermal Imaging School

“I was exposed to the fire service in 2008 while performing community service at the Alamance Community Fire Department (AFD). After completing my community service, AFD brought me on as a volunteer, and in 2010, I was awarded Rookie of the Year. I became a full-time firefighter at AFD in 2014, serving over the fire prevention program (something I’m still proud of today). In 2015, I was offered the opportunity of becoming a full-time firefighter with Guilford County Emergency Services Fire Operations Division on Rescue 50, a truck that works in assistance with fire units all over Guilford county.

When I am asked how I like my job, I always say, “It beats working for a living.” This is because I love my job and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. In 2017, I was promoted to Fire Captain, and in 2019, I was awarded Fire Officer of the Year. I am excited about the future of my career, new experiences, and the challenges I will face.”
